Yes, it’s that time of year again where every blog compiles their lists of what songs, albums or movies they have liked over the past 12 months. 2010 has been an exceptionally good year for music with acts from the new school and old school making moves. Artists such as Kanye West have blessed us with a new album, while acts such as Example and Professor Green have found a niche in the UK mainstream and Dubstep is finally cemented in the nation’s consciousness.
I have decided to compile a top list of my own and review some of my favourite video’s that have featured on Cypherz this year; and after all it’s been a great year for the blog having made it in to the BT DMA’s top 30 blogs of 2010 as voted for by you our readers! Here you have it my 20+10 favourite videos from the year.
30. The Disablists – Heavy Rotation The Disablists started life as a Jazz Trio, realised that they had no talent for real instruments and bought turntables, this track featuring the Foreign Beggars has some great animation
29. Ghetts – Trained To Kill Ghetts and Dot Rotten come together to create a banger with a dark video to match. UK Grime delivers again.
28. Melanin 9 – Shot M9 released this video fairly recently to coincide with the release of his new mixtape “Orions Stencil”, heavy UK Hip Hop.
27. Caspa – Back For The First Time Dubstep producer Caspa blessed us with this video in the summer as the visuals to his uplifting new release Back for the first time.
26. kidkanevil – Yokai unleash your inner gorilla to kidkanevil’s video for this single from his Basho Basho LP
25. Scorzayzee – Fire in the Booth Charlie Sloth took over the Hip Hop Mix Show on 1Xtra earlier this year and introduced a new feature Fire in the Booth. Nottingham veteran rapper-cum-actor Scorz drops some heavy bars for the show live.
24. Skandal – Kill Em Wit The Flow Black The Ripper and Little Dee jump on the mic with Skandal for this UKHH banger.
23. Redman – Def Jammable Redman dishes up some hard bars over his new release due out any day now…
22. Mystro – Aquarius MysDiggi had a great year following his 2009 UK Rap Up released at the 11th hour of 2009, Aquarius is a truly great lyrical masterpiece…
21. CNN – Hood Pride yeah, that’s right… Capone-N-Noreaga, good humour and one for the fans…
20. Raekwon – Canal Street the Wu Tang member delivers some great visuals to this track directed by LaMarck
19. Reflection Eternal ft. Estelle “Midnight Hour” Talib Kweli and Hi Tek’s album “Revolutions per Minute” dropped this year and we reviewed it.
18. Sway – Life Sway is one of the UK’s hottest properties right now and his Delivery Mixtape 2 delivered yet again in 2010…
17. Sick Cycle – Concept (Nasty Genius Dubstep Remix) sweet dreams are made of filthy dubstep videos. Womp, Womp, Womp!!
16. John Legend & The Roots – Wake Up Everybody this is the kind of video you can create when you put some of the most talented musicians in the world together and allow them the freedom to deliver something spectacular.
15. Katy B – Katy On A Mission Katy B had a great 2010 and this single released by Rinse gave her and Benga a top 10 hit this summer…
14. Akala F64 the boys and girls at SBTV have been causing a stir in the entertainment world throughout 2010; putting out hours of video from up & coming acts to red carpet interviews; however the F64 is still their staple and Akala spat some truth during his 64 bars.
13. Ty – Emotions Ty’s 4th studio album, Special Kind of Fool dropped in Q1 2010 and was reviewed by Tom Coxhead for Cypherz. A wonderful album and a true feel good video.
12. Genesis Elijah & Krate Krusaders – Doing My Damn Thing production duo of 1Step and Badhabitz have teamed up with Genesis Elijah to produce a great UK hip-hop track with a high impact video.
11. Kid Cudi – Erase Me Kanye West and Kid Cudi teamed up a few months ago to deliver this video to the track Erase Me.
10. Nero – Me & You this video only dropped a few days ago and already jumps in to my top 25 videos of 2010. They’ve absolutely smashed it again and the single is released early 2011.
9. Devlin – Runaway Devlin has had a great year in 2010 and this single featuring Yasmin charted well; along with his debut album
8. Kalae All Day – O.G.LYRIKALBOOKBAGGER a vibrantly swift invitation for viewers to be the first to experience “afromatic-neo hippie-rockstar-soul music” from the talented Kalae All Day and Homeboy Sandman.
7. Professor Green – Jungle this video from Pro Green’s debut LP “Alive Til I’m Dead” is gritty and dark, with a disconcertingly menacing bassline.
6. True Tiger feat P.Money – Slang Like This “…this one’s a banger…” I think that line just about sums up this 2010 dubstep club anthem, nice visuals to the year’s catchiest tune.
5. Mystro – Around My Way this is the second video to feature from UK Hip Hop artist Mystro, this video really shows the true showmanship and charisma of this guy and it was a pleasure to meet him in March, be sure to find him on Twitter @Mystrogen
4. Example – Kickstarts (Bar9 Remix) Wow, that’s all I have to say about this video amazing story board and well choreographed fight scenes mean this video is a sure fire in the top 5.
3. Method Man, Ghostface, & Raekwon – Our Dreams a great video from 3 of the Wu’s finest emcees. We reviewed their album Wu Massacre as it was released in March. Amazing production on the beats from RZA sampling a Michael Jackson hook.Damn there’s some fine ass ladies in this vid…
2. Chase and Status – Let You Go this is definitely one of the best videos this year; the plot shows a Jeremy Kyle style TV host living a lifestyle many of the people on his TV shows would despise… great track – excellent video – lots of bad behaviour!
1. Wretch 32 – Traktor here you have it the big bad number one. Wretch 32 is the man to watch for in 2011 as he releases Traktor in January and is featured on the BBC Sound of 2011 list. It’s a brilliant video, and if it wasn’t for the snowy owl then it might not have made the top 20…
