Akala’s been around for a while now, his debut LP “It’s Not a Rumor” was released to critical acclaim in 2006 and was followed swiftly by 2007′s “Freedom Lasso”, May 3rd 2010 saw the release of Akala’s 3rd solo release “Doublethink”. Akala is a well educated and intelligent young man who currently uses the genre of HipHop to teach others the joys of the great Baird. (Shakespeare if you have to ask…)
As in Akala’s previous two releases he is not afraid to experiment with his sound and draws upon on his influences of Rock, Punk, Techno and classic hip hop beats. However as always with Akala his lyrics and flow are the main selling points – he is not afraid to discuss often uncomfortable topics such as materialism, war, violence and social dystopia. “Doublethinks” lead single “XXL” was received to mixed responses as it’s far more “pop” than your usual Akala fair of politically inspired and socially adept verses.
Thankfully however, this album cements the well known fact amongst many of the UK’s Hip Hop Community that Akala is one of the most intelligent lyricists we have in this country and no doubt proves you can have still provide substance and content in this digital instant gratification obsessed world.
The streets gave birth to hip hop, and the streets are where it lives. But the corporate world stole rap. Now Akala’s stealing it back.
