This year will see full releases from several of the Dubstep elite with Caspa, Skream and Joker also dropping their new LP’s, following the exceptionally commercial driven rise of dubstep into the “mainstream’s” consciousness. OMG is Rusko’s debut LP, a man who has divided the dubstep scene, takes us through a 14-track adventure that moves from disco to house, from dance-pop to techno, with his signature mid ranged wobbles and tremoring sub. Such is Rusko’s meteoric rise from the underground scene that there is recent news in the press that he’s teamed up with everyone’s favourite Schizoid Britney Spears… Oh JOY!! Nothing against Rusko he’s grafted to get here, but dubstep’s sound is becoming more and more watered down as people look for the “crossover” appeal.
The opening track and albums first single “Woo Boost”, is your stereotypical Rusko track, no doubt the track has been a dancfloor smash but it fails to spark the imagination with a flavour of anything new… “Scareware” features from Rusko’s 2008 Essential Mix and is simply not good enough to appear as an album track. “Hold On” the album’s second track features Amber Coffman from Dirty Projectors, will no doubt be the most commercially successful track on the album as it features a pre Y2k garage beat and fresh vocals, an ark back to the time dubstep dubstepped away from 2-Step.
“Oy” also from the 2008 Essential Mix, collaborated with Crookers, is very glitchy and may take a few listens to appreciate, where as “Kumon Kumon” and “Ravers Special” also reach out to the rave and house scene’s with the pitched up sonics and use of piano and vo-coder.
I’m going to be honest this is a “pop” album, plain and simple, if you’re a dub step aficionado and expect to get your wobble appetite fed for 60 odd minutes then put this down, Rusko has laid out an eclectic upbeat album away from his early underground days, but still with the bass heavy roots.
