Skream’s self titled debut release was many’s introduction to Dubstep with the now almost anthemic “Midnight Request Line”, despite a steady stream of 12-inch releases in the interim, it’s surprising that Outside the Box is only his second full-length LP.
The album, while steeped in dubstep, is wide-ranging in scope Outside The Box incorporates it all; the original Dubstep sound, the genre in 2010, the USA take on it, some strong vocals and finally and most importantly the potential power of this phenomenal sound.
Listening To the Records On My Walls, junglistic characteristics carries the Amen break, but the melody and mechanics of the breakdown are transcendental. Wibbler pretty much does what it says on the label, wobbling dubstep showing the emphasis of bass in the genre, club banger is written all over this! The album isn’t perfect, 8 Bit Baby feat. Murs just doesn’t do it for me in the slightest, his flow is on point over the dubstep track but his lyrics are average.
If you are harking after Skream’s grittier productions you won’t find many of them here, and you’d be better placed to check his recent Freeizm series. However this offers an interesting opener into the whole genre and I’m sure will no doubt chart fairly well…
